Cortical stimulation


A multicontact penetrating implant is shown here. One of the contacts is shown in the lower right. The electrodes were used for chronic stimulation and pulsed sequentially in numerical order as labeled on the upper right of this figure.

Electrical potentials from the pyramidal (motor) tract in the spinal cord of the same side, evoked by cortical stimulation, are shown in this figure.
Larger current amplitudes result in greater current spread, activate more neurons and evoke an increased response in the motor tract.

 


 

Results from stimulation for 7 hours, (4 nC/phase at 50 Hz.). All 16 electrodes were stimulated simultaneously. Threshold measurements made for 18 days following 7-hour stimulation period are shown in this figure.
