Mather Gymnasium is used by the University's Modern Dance program for study and performance. It was designed by the firm of Hubbell and Benes, architects of the West Side Market and the Cleveland Museum of Art. It replaced the original gymnasium in the attic of Clark Hall, which had become inadequate as the enrollment of the college increased. Money for the building was raised by a committee of the Board of Trustees, and the building was equipped by the alumnae.
