Alumni to gather at games

Case Western Reserve University's Alumni Relations, Programs and Events office is hosting receptions for Case alumni during select road sporting events.

Receptions will take place between the men's and women's basketball games at 4 p.m. February 6 in the Cole Sports Center at New York University and at 11 a.m. February 8 in the Auerbach multi-purpose room at Brandeis University.

Garden to offer free admission

The Cleveland Botanical Garden is offering Case Western Reserve University employees free lunchtime admission from noon to 2 p.m.

Case faculty and staff can enjoy their meal and see the Botanical Garden's new Glasshouse for free by showing their Case I.D.

Group to discuss Mac products

Case Western Reserve University's Mac Special Interest Group, SIGMAC, will host "Mac OS X and Engineering Talk" at 11:30 a.m. February 5 in Glennan 421.

Lunch will be provided.

In addition to the Apple Computer Inc., Mac OS X operating system, the group will disucss Apple's product line of laptop and desktop machines, observe demonstrations of key engineering applications on Mac OS X and hear from current faculty at the Case School of Engineering who use Mac OS X.

Lecture to look at water, welfare

"Water and Welfare-A Global Perspective" will be the topic of the sixth annual Case Western Reserve University Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences Herman D. Stein Lecture in International Social Welfare. The lecture will take place at 4:30 p.m. February 11 in room 103 of the Peter B. Lewis Building.

Speaking will be Margaret Catley-Carlson, chair of the Global Water Partnership and of the International Center for Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).

Discussant for the lecture will be Mihajlo (Mike) Mesarovic, the Cady Staley Professor of Systems Engineering and Mathematics at the Case School of Engineering. As the scientific adviser on global change to the United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Mesarovic led a Case team in a system's analysis of the Nile River Basin Sustainable Development initiative. He has lectured in more than 40 countries around the world.

Primaries to be subject of forum

Case Western Reserve University political scientists will participate in a Presidential Nomination Politics Forum that will feature Emmett H. Buell Jr., the author of "The Changing Face of the New Hampshire Primary" and co-editor of "Nominating the President."

The free event, sponsored by the Case Center for Policy Studies, takes place from 4:30-6 p.m. February 6 in the 1914 Lounge of Thwing Center.

Alexander Lamis, Case associate professor of political science, will moderate the discussion, with comments by Case Political Scientist Emery G. Lee.

Black history program slated

The Case Western Reserve University Office of Multicultural Affairs and African-American Faculty & Staff Organization invite members of the university and Cleveland-area communities to attend the Second Annual Black History Month Celebration.

Called "United We Stand: Where There's Unity, There's Strength," the program, which will offer reflections on the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr., is at noon February 20 in the Thwing Center Ballroom.

Performances will include J.T. Lynch of Horns & Things and praise dance by Michael Tyree and Kari Taylor. In addition, Elmira Sams will present a dramatization of Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I A Woman?" and Bishop Douglas H. Taylor, pastor of the New Covenant Christian Church in Cleveland, will speak.

Support available for institute

As part of Case Western Reserve University's commitment to promoting the development of women leaders at Case, Interim Provost Lynn Singer is accepting applications for financial support for attendance at the Bryn Mawr Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration.
The 2004 program is offered June 27 through July 23.
