New program offers job experience to students, tech support to faculty

Instructional Technology and Academic Computing at Case has launched a new program that uses students to meet growing campus needs for technology support.

The Student Technology Consultant (STC) Program is intended to accomplish two main goals: provide a resource to students who are interested in campus jobs in information technology and provide a source of qualified personnel to meet the ever-growing campus demand for technology support staff.

The STC program accepts students from every discipline at Case, provided they demonstrate a willingness to work, learn and grow professionally. Along with pay, students receive ongoing training in various aspects of technology support.

As many as 20 students are expected to participate in the program in its first year. Students will receive training and instruction in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Symantec Virus Protection, Eudora, Mac and PC operating systems, Internet basics, basic PC hardware and software troubleshooting, computer networking, customer service, professionalism and ethics.

"The students I work with from the STC program are among the best I've ever worked with," said Liz Madigan, associate professor of nursing and chair of the Faculty Senate Committee on Information Resources, who helped pilot the STC Program. "They're motivated to work with and learn about technology. Their presence in campus departments should provide a significant contribution to the establishment of technology as an integral part of how the University functions."

Akhila Raghavan, a student technology consultant and senior majoring in management, is excited about the hands-on experience this new program provides.

"What I've learned in the classroom has given me a good knowledge base," Raghavan said. "STC gives me the chance to utilize that theory in a practical setting and an opportunity to show prospective employers what I can do, as well as what I know."
