Volunteers
to show community Case cares
by
Susan Griffith
Faculty, staff and students can show Cleveland firsthand that Case Western Reserve University cares during "Case for Community" day—the University's first campus-wide community service day—September 17. Members of the campus community can register online now at http://www.case.edu/events/cfc to volunteer for one of many projects. Registration is required for release time from work. On the Web site, volunteers choose among projects like working with Habitat for Humanity, taking part in an activity at a Cleveland school, entertaining members of a retirement community or health care facility, landscaping areas of University Circle and collecting for the Cleveland Food Bank. Co-sponsored by the Office of President and Provost and the Staff Advisory Council, Case for Community Day kicks off at 11:30 a.m. September 17 with a box lunch in the Thwing Ballroom. Remarks from President Edward M. Hundert, who encourages the Case community "to use our wealth of resources to significantly benefit surrounding neighborhoods while creating a sense of collaboration among our internal constituencies," will follow. Case volunteers will leave Thwing at approximately 12:30 p.m. and head to sites around Cleveland to assist in service projects from 1-5 p.m., or until the project is completed. Transportation to volunteer sites will be provided for those who need it. For faculty, staff or students unable to leave, on-campus volunteer opportunities and drives will be available. While registering, faculty, staff and students are asked to select three service projects and label them as first, second and third choices. Offices interested in volunteering as a group of 10 or more, must contact Erin Walsh, Case's director of programs and events and a member of SAC's Community Service Committee, for special placement. Volunteers will be notified of their site assignment in early September. Walsh and Susan Shurin, Case vice president of the corporation, are co-chairing the event. The mission of Case for Community Day is: to provide an opportunity for Case to connect with surrounding neighborhoods and agencies by becoming aware of their needs and seeking opportunities for philanthropic projects; to foster a sense of collaboration among staff, faculty and students as they communicate the University's effort to be a productive partner in our relationship with the city; and to demonstrate the University's goal of synergy between education and a service mission by advancing knowledge and improving humanity.
