In response to the need to replenish depleted blood supplies, staff in Thwing Center, the Center for Women and the Orientation 2003 Task Force are hosting a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. August 22 in the Spartan Room of Thwing. President Edward M. Hundert has announced winners of the freshman summer reading program essay contest. They are Teresa Evans for "Wonder Memories, Despite It All," in the narrative category and Johnson Wei for "Subjective Normality: Not As Clear as White and Black" and Shaan C. Ghandi, for "The Abnormality of Normalness" in the expository category. The students' 500- to 1,000-word essays were written in answer to one of four questions on the assigned freshman reading, "An Anthropologist on Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales" by Oliver W. Sacks. Winners of the contest, which was sponsored by the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities, received $200 gift certificates to the University bookstore.
All female faculty and staff members are invited to a series of drop-in brown bag lunches at the Center for Women on the first Friday of each month. The lunches, which do not have special agendas but rather are designed for networking, socializing and support, are from noon to 1 p.m. September 5, October 3, November 7, December 5, January 2, February 6, March 5, April 2, May 7 and June 4. The Office of University Communication is updating its directory of
Faculty Experts If you are a current faculty expert or would like to become an expert, review the current directory of topics that link to faculty specialists at http://www.case.edu/pubaff/univcomm/source/intro.htm. If you already are included as a specialist in a particular area, please submit any changes for your contact information and/or areas of expertise. If you are not on the roster but would like to join, submit your name, faculty designation, campus address, telephone number and e-mail address along with a list of subjects on which you will be comfortable rendering expert opinion to media. All new or revised information should be sent to Maria Wolf at maria.wolf@case.edu by September 30.
Information, including course selection forms, on the postgraduate audit program for individuals who hold an M.D., N.D., D.D.S. or Ph.D. and are involved in research or clinical programs, is available from the Graduate Studies office, which now is located on the sixth floor of Nord Hall. Case's Eldercare Resource Group will be starting the new academic year with a presentation by Home Instead from noon to 1 p.m. September 17 in Crawford 13. Amy Severino from Home Instead will discuss how to make seniors' homes easily accessible and how to ensure they are living safely. Home Instead also is providing lunch for this meeting. People who plan to attend should RSVP by September 12 to Carolyn Gerich at carolyn.gerich@case.edu or 368-2458. Speakers and topics for upcoming meetings include Hyatt Legal Plans on "POAs and Living Wills," October 16; Teresa Dolinar, associate professor of geriatric medicine, on a topic to be determined, November 11; and Elaine Molis from Concordia Care on "Long Distance Eldercare," December 10. The Center for Women Book Discussion Group had made reading selections for its meetings through the end of the year. The group also has scheduled a meeting to discuss future selections. It is from noon to 1 p.m. October 2 in Crawford 720. Books to be discussed over the next four months
