Case
In Brief
Info here
Case community can register for Convocation All faculty, staff, students,
alumni and friends of Case Western Reserve University are invited to
attend the University's annual Fall Convocation,
which is at 4:30 p.m. August 28 in Severance Hall. Seating for the event is limited, so all faculty, staff, students and alumni must register online at http://www.case.edu/convocation/register.htm. There are four different registration forms, one for faculty, deans and vice presidents; one for alumni; one for staff and one for students. Cutting-edge diner starts staying open late Case students, faculty and staff have a new dining option-one that extends into the early hours of the morning and allows them to check their e-mail and surf the Web over burgers and shakes. Beginning this
month, the Silver Spartan, a 1950's-style diner, at 11377 Bellflower
Court, just east of Flower Restaurant and behind Bellflower
Hall, will extend its hours and now will be open from 8 p.m. A unique feature of the new facility is its accessibility to wireless communication devices, such as palm pilots and laptop computers. It is likely the only wireless diner in the country. New 'chalk' marks wireless access on campus Warchalking is the practice of marking a series of symbols on sidewalks and walls to indicate nearby wireless access. It was inspired by the practice of hobos during the Great Depression who used chalk marks to indicate friendly homes.
All over campus this fall members of the campus community will see hundreds of Case's own warchalk known as CASEChalk. "Over 1,200 wireless access points are connected all over the University. We have focused on student hang outs, residence halls, food places and the like," said Don Kamalsky, assistant vice president for student affairs and director of housing. "Even the new Silver Spartan diner has wireless access. It's totally cool. "Last year students wanted more access," Kamalsky continued. "This year every Greek house, every residence hall has wireless access." Accessing the network with wireless is as easy as powering up a notebook and logging on using virtual private network (VPN) software. To use VPN, go to http://vpnsetup.case.edu.
