New
curriculum piloted
Students at the School of Dentistry will start taking advantage of
experiential learning opportunities earlier in their education than
at most other dental schools.
As part of the dentistry school's overall
goal to give students a breadth and diversity of educational experiences
in clinical, research and
community dentistry, the school's education committee has approved
a pilot program in which students start to work with patients in
the student dental clinics in their second year of training.
Traditionally at Case and other dental schools around the country,
they wait until their
junior year.
The pilot also streamlines the regular 32 weeks of dental
education into six weeks of three sessions per week. Ten students
from more than
half of the class of 70 first-year students have volunteered to pilot
the summer educational program.
Faculty practice expands
The University Dental Practice Associates
at Case-the dentistry faculty's private dental practice on campus-has
expanded services with the
addition of three new faculty dentists.
Joining the group practice
are Judith Ablaza and Jose Arauz-Dutari, both periodontists, and
Santiago Moncayo, a general dentist.
Each
faculty practice dentist works one day during the dental office's
hours, which are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The office accepts the
dental insurance plans of DenteMax and DeltaDental, which also is the
dental provider
for some
Kaiser Permanente health plans.
Other members of the faculty
dental practice are Fady Faddoul and Hussein Assaf, general dentistry;
Angela Graves and Sahar
Bajoury,
prosthodontics;
Sami Chogle, endodontics; and Manish Valiathan and Martin
Palomo, orthodontics. Hygienist Marna McGuire and dental assistants
Katherine Blackley and
Erin Soukup also are part of the practice.
