Bauer honored by Apple

William Bauer

William Bauer, assistant professor of music education, is a member of the 2003 Class of Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE), a select group of educational innovators from prekindergarten through postgraduate school who pioneer technology in the classroom.

Bauer joined some of the 240 exceptional educators from around the world who were honored during an ADE summer camp at Walker Creek Ranch in Northern California. At the summer camp he explored ways to further integrate Apple's newest technology in music education.

Art history adds specialists

John Ciofalo

The art history department has transformed itself from a generalist department to one with expertise in the 19th and 20th centuries with the addition of two new hires.

John Ciofalo, formerly a Case visiting associate professor, becomes the University's new associate professor of art history. In addition to his outstanding teaching evaluations, Ciofalo is author of the book "The Self-Portrait of Francisco Goya" (Cambridge University Press), which earned him the Museo del Prado (Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain) Book of the Year in May.

Joining the department in January 2004 will be Anne Helmreich, Case associate professor and the author of "The English Garden & National Identity" (Cambridge University Press). Helmreich comes to Case from Texas Christian University. She also is the current president of the Historians of British Art.

Alan Rocke

Rocke returns from Berlin

Alan Rocke, Henry Eldridge Bourne Professor of History, recently returned from Berlin, following a two-month stint as a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science.

Rocke's work during the appointment centered on the 19th century German chemist Justus von Liebig (1803-1873). In 1830, Liebig invented a device called the "kaliapparat," which simplified organic analysis and allowed Liebig to organize and direct research groups, for the first time in history.

During his time in Europe, Rocke also gave lectures about Liebig in Berlin, Hamburg, London and Giessen, Germany, at the Justus Liebig Universitaet, in honor of the 200th anniversary of Liebig's birth.
