Hughes named interim athletic director

Kristin Hughes, who has been involved with Spartan athletics for the past decade as both a coach and administrator, has been named interim director of Case Western Reserve University's intercollegiate athletics program.

An assistant athletic director and primary women's administrator since 2001, Hughes has served as head coach of the CWRU women's basketball team throughout her 10-year career (hired in 1993) in University Circle.

"I am looking forward to the challenges that will come with this position," said Hughes. "There are a lot of great opportunities at our institution as well as a lot of good people to work with. I'm excited to get started with this new experience."

Hughes takes over for David Hutter, who is retiring after 18 years as the University's athletic director. Her interim duties officially begin July 1.

CWRU's Vice President of Student Affairs Glenn Nicholls has named a search committee, and anticipates that it will take several months to select a permanent replacement.

"We are moving forward in our search for new leadership for our athletic department and are very pleased that Kristin has, in the interim, decided to take on that responsibility," said Nicholls. "Coach Hughes is well respected by her peers and the University's student-athletes, which made her an excellent choice."

Hughes said she has not yet decided whether she will make herself a candidate for the permanent position.

At CWRU, Hughes' highlight to date on the basketball court came in 2001-2002 when she guided the Spartans to a record setting 20-win season and their first appearance in the NCAA postseason. Prior to her arrival in University Circle, she spent two seasons as an assistant coach in basketball at Amherst College and was an assistant varsity and head junior varsity women's lacrosse coach at Smith College.

A 1991 graduate of Elms College, Hughes won the Monsignor Timothy J. Leary Student-Athlete Award as a senior. She played basketball and lacrosse all four years and captained both teams her junior and senior seasons. In 1993, she completed a master's degree in exercise and sports studies from Smith College.
