by Jeff Bendix
Faculty and students at CWRU's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing were big winners at the 2003 Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) Awards Ceremony, held last month in Grand Rapids, Mich. Five professors and one student received awards for their research, and CWRU faculty received three of the top four awards. Gene Cranston Anderson, professor of nursing, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is presented to the society member who has most significantly advanced the profession of nursing either through an extensive program of research or creating environments where research can flourish and whose career has yielded noteworthy accomplishments. Beverly Roberts, professor of nursing, was the recipient of the 2003 Distinguished Contribution to Research in the Midwest Award, which recognizes the contributions of a member who has conducted or promoted research that has enhanced the science and practice of nursing in that region. Carol Musil, associate professor of nursing, received the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing/MNRS Award for Leadership in Geriatric Nursing Research. The award recognizes society members who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in geriatric nursing science and who have improved the quality of care for older adults in the region through their scholarship and mentorship. It also recognizes research that guided and improved geriatric nursing practice and/or promoted science-based education in geriatric nursing. In addition, Elizabeth Madigan, associate professor and assistant dean for international programs at the Bolton School, received an award from the society's Public Health/Community Health section for outstanding research among new investigators. And Mary Dolansky was presented with the 2003 Outstanding Dissertation Award in the Gerontological Nursing Section. Among Bolton School students, Abir K. Bekhet, a doctorate student, won first place in the MNRS 2003 Graduate Student Poster Exchange for her poster "The Effects of Positive Cognitions and Resourcefulness on the Relationship between Relocation and Adaptive Functioning of Elders in Retirement Communities." Mary Dolansky, also a doctoral student, received the 2003 Outstanding Dissertation Award in the Gerontological Nursing section. This is the fourth consecutive year that a CWRU nursing student has won the Graduate Student Poster Exchange honor.
