A highly distinguished panel will help the School of Medicine dedicate its state-of-the-art Wood Building Research Tower on May 16. Participating in a symposium called "Reminiscence, Research and Public Health: The Challenges and the Accomplishments" are speakers Nobel laureate and CWRU alumnus Paul Berg; former U.S. Surgeon General and alumnus David Satcher; Chief Development Officer for the City of Cleveland Tim Mueller; CWRU President Edward M. Hundert; School of Medicine Dean Ralph Horwitz; Director of the Center for Science, Health and Society Nathan Berger; and the Jean and Leonard Skeggs Professor Richard Hanson. The program will be moderated by Theodore J. Castele, alumnus and chairman of the Campaign for the Future of Academic Medicine. The night before the Research Tower dedication, there will be a private dinner and ceremony to dedicate the medical school's east wing as the Frederick C. Robbins Building in honor of CWRU's only resident Nobel laureate. Concert series returns in June The 2003 Thursdays in the Park summer concert schedule has been set. The lineup of local bands with a range of musical influences begins with Disco Inferno at 5:30 p.m. June 5. Other performers are Cletus Black, June 12; Carlos Jones and the PLUS Band, June 19; Slap, June 26; Anne E. DeChant, July 10; Kiddo, July 17; Hillbilly Idol, July 24; and Roberto Ocasio, July 31. All concerts, which are free and open to the public, are from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Turning Point Park. Food and beverages will be available. CWRU will host two meetings on retirement plan benefits. The first, "Act Now, Enroll," is from 10-11 a.m. and again from 2-3 p.m. May 22 in room 209 of Crawford Hall. This session will cover CWRU staff retirement plan C. The second meeting, "Create Your Plan," is from 11 a.m. to noon and then again from 3-4 p.m. May 22, also in room 209 of Crawford Hall. A Vanguard retirement education specialist will explain and answer questions about stocks, bonds, cash investments and other issues of investing. Volunteers are needed to help set up for and sell beverages during the Parade the Circle Celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 14 at Wade Oval. All volunteers attend an orientation meeting with University Circle Inc. (UCI) staff and will receive an official "event staff" T-shirt to wear during Parade the Circle. Volunteers also are invited to an event staff thank you party a week or two after the event. Jointly presented by the Cleveland Museum of Art and UCI, this free event includes a colorful arts parade and continuous family activities presented by more than 30 University Circle organizations. The Instructional Technology and Academic Computing photography department located in room WG60 of the medical school will moving. Beginning June 2, passport, practical training, green card, visa and medical and dental board application photo services will be located in Access Services in room 18 of Crawford Hall. Walk-up photography services will be offered only from 2-4 p.m. weekdays at the new location. In addition, Access Services also offers ID cards, parking permits, meal plan and CWRUCard-related services; issues keys; and sells entertainment tickets. Case for UNICEF is conducting a fund-raising drive to raise $3,000 by the end of the semester to assist children in Iraq. The drive is being sponsored by several campus organizations. Contributions may be made at donation boxes in the University Library, Thwing Center, Leutner and Fribley commons, Tomlinson Hall, the Biomedical Research Building, Strosacker Auditorium during movie nights, the Cleveland Institute of Music on concert nights and the Cleveland Institute of Art student services office. The Controller's Office, in collaboration with others on campus, is offering workshops on administrative policies and procedures throughout May. The workshops, which cover topics ranging from payroll to accounting to purchasing, are open to all faculty and staff. Space at the workshops is limited, and spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Today is the final day the University Library will continue its extended hours for the end of semester and exams. The library will be open today from 8 a.m. to midnight and from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 9. Book selection and circulation transactions conclude at 11:45 p.m. The main floor and lower level will be open for study areas during the extra hours, but the second and third floors are closed. CWRU's School of Dentistry needs 100 youths between the ages of 11-18 to serve as patients for the incoming orthodontics class that arrives July 1. CWRU offers a free screening to see if the youths qualify for braces. If selected as a patient, a youth's complete orthodontic work is normally around $1,800 and must be paid at the beginning of treatment. For information or appointments, call 368-3249.
The Manor House at Squire Valleevue Farm will be undergoing renovations. In order to complete the work required, the house must be closed to meetings and events for the months of July, August and September 2003. The construction involved will include installation of a new sandstone patio, waterproofing and replacing front lawn drainage.
