by Susan Griffith

Stephanie Bush, a junior from West Linn, Ore., has been awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in recognition for her achievements in science.

She is one of 300 students selected from a pool of 1,093 applicants nationally to be honored. Bush is a physics major who plans to have a career as an astronomer after attending graduate school and obtaining her doctorate in astronomy. She worked last summer with Glenn Starkman, CWRU professor of physics, in research on interpreting spectral data on the solar corona.

This is the third year in a row that CWRU has had a Goldwater Scholar, according to Margaret Robinson, CWRU dean of undergraduate studies.

This summer, Bush has the opportunity to participate in the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) to study gas in irregular galaxies with Eric Wilcots from UW.

At CWRU, she is active as president of the Physics and Astronomy Club, serving as president this year and re-elected as president for her senior year. She tutors ninth graders in the Church of the Covenant's Saturday Tutoring Program, is involved with the Sierra Club, participates in the Women in Science Roundtable at CWRU and represents undergraduates on the Commission on Research and Graduate Programs at CWRU.

In addition to the Goldwater Scholarship, her efforts have garnered several honors, including the CWRU Dean's High Honors list five times since she began classes at CWRU. She also is among Who's Who Among Students in American University and Colleges (2003), has been inducted into the Golden Key National Honor Society (2002) and won the Krumhansl Family Prize in 2002 as an outstanding undergraduate woman and for her academic accomplishments in physics.

The Goldwater Scholarship, established by public law in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, fosters outstanding students with interests in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The scholarship provides stipends up to $7,500 to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books and room and board.
