Faculty and staff who rent lockers at the Veale Center can renew their lease through June 30. The cost of renting a locker for the 2003-2004 academic year is $70. Check may be made payable to CWRU. Those who do not wish to renew their lease must empty their lockers by June 30, or they will be cleaned out July 1. Only photo services for passport, practical training, green card, visa and medical and dental board applications will be moving to Access Services. Beginning June 2, these services will be available from 2-4 p.m. weekdays in Crawford Hall room 18. Photography and graphics provided by Image Services will remain in the School of Medicine room WG60. Image Services is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1-4:30 p.m. weekdays. Access Services also offers ID cards, parking permits, meal plan and CWRUcard-related services, key issuance and entertainment tickets sales. Hours of operation for these services will remain 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in Crawford. Visit the Access Services Web site at http://www.cwrucard.com for additional information.
Bids are being accepted on a 1994 Ford pickup F-250 with 46,000 miles, which need's mechanical work but is being sold as is. Bids starting at $1,500 will be accepted beginning May 23. They should be submitted before 4 p.m. June 6 to John Lawyer, director, Material Support, Cedar Avenue Service Center. Questions should be directed to Jim Wheatley at 368-6538.
The staff service awards will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. June 12 in the Thwing Ballroom. The luncheon is conducted each year to recognize employees with 10 and 25 years of service to the University and to honor the recipients of the President's Award for Distinguished Service. Edward M. Hundert, CWRU president, will present the awards. Attendance is by invitation only.
The Center for Health Promotion Research, directed by Elaine Borawski, will host an open house from 2-5 p.m. June 6. Members of the CWRU community are invited to view the center's new offices on the first floor of the Triangle Building, 11430 Euclid Ave., located at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Mayfield Road. The center, part of the School of Medicine's department of epidemiology and biostatistics, has the mission to develop, evaluate and disseminate health promotion and disease prevention programs in diverse settings and populations, with an emphasis on community-based research and evaluation. Come look for a reading treasure among the 50,000 books in CWRU's Book Sale 2003 May 31 through June 3 in Adelbert Gym. The sale opens from 10 a.m. to noon May 31 with a presale ($20 admission) and is followed by free hours from noon to 6 p.m. May 31, June 1 and June 2 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 3. June 3 also is the box sale ($5 a box). Free parking is available for book sale customers May 31 and June 1 in the Art Studio parking lot.
CWRU announces the availability of a fellowship for scholars interested in pursuing post-baccalaureate study at a university in continental Europe or in South America. Fields of study include literature, European and South American history, diplomatic history and international law. Recipients must be U.S. citizens with a bachelor's degree, be interested in pursuing a diplomatic career and be proficient in French and one other European language. Selection will be on the basis of academic achievement as well as personal character. The fellowship of $20,000 may be awarded to partially defray expenses related to the program of study. Awardees may apply for up to two additional annual renewals, the granting of which will be contingent upon the quality of work done and the fellow's plans for future work. A letter of application should describe the applicant's academic background, language skills, career goals, a detailed plan of study, amounts and sources of other funds to support the program of study and the names of three references. The letter of application and transcripts of all baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate work should be sent to: Stephen E. Haynesworth, associate dean, College of Arts and Sciences, 7068. Applications must be received no later than May 30. Awards will be announced June 16.
The Staff Advisory Council will host its next vision forum with President Edward M. Hundert from 3:30-5 p.m. June 17 tentatively in Clapp Hall room 108. All staff are welcome to discuss with Hundert how they can help make CWRU the most powerful learning environment in the world. Refreshments will be provided. Joseph M. Thomas, surgeon and professor in the department of ophthalmology at the School of Medicine, will discuss the LASIK procedure during a brown bag seminar from 12:15-1:15 p.m. June 19 in the Dampeer Room on the second floor of the University Library. CWRU will host the citywide General Equivalency Diploma (GED) recognition ceremony at 7:30 p.m. June 5 in Amasa Stone Chapel. Bobby McDowell, manager of the Cleveland Municipal Schools Adult and Continuing Education Program, will preside. A reception will follow in the Baker Building. This is the 21st year that the University will host the ceremony, which recognizes outstanding students and volunteers from the GED, Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs. Glenn Nicholls, vice president of student affairs, and Richard Baznik, vice president of government and community relations, will welcome students, guests, Cleveland Municipal School District Board members, representatives from the Ohio Department of Education and state legislators. This year marks 31 years of GED/ABLE/ESOL instruction at CWRU. More than 500 people have participated in the program on the University campus this year, and of these, more than half are from the University community.
The Center for Women Book Discussion Group will feature Dust Tracks On The Road by Zora Neale Hurston. The group will meet from noon to 1 p.m. June 4 in Crawford 720. To learn more, contact Rosemary Alexander at rka2.
The 2003 Thursdays in the Park summer concert schedule has been set. The lineup of local bands with a range of musical influences begins with Disco Inferno at 5:30 p.m. June 5. Other performers are Cletus Black, June 12; Carlos Jones and the PLUS Band, June 19; Slap, June 26; Anne E. DeChant, July 10; Kiddo, July 17; Hillbilly Idol, July 24; and Roberto Ocasio, July 31. All concerts, which are free and open to the public, are from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Turning Point Park. Food and beverages will be available.
