Jose A. Cabranes, a judge on the United States Court of Appeals
for the Second Circuit and the first Puerto Rican appointed to
the federal bench in the continental United States, will deliver
the 2003 Sumner Canary Lecture at the CWRU School of Law.
The title of Cabranes's lecture will be "University Governance
in the Enron Era." It will take place at 4:45 p.m. April 8 in
room A59 of the law school
"We are delighted that Judge Cabranes will be delivering the
Canary lecture this year, and we are honored to host this lecture
named after one of our most distinguished alumni," said Gerald
Korngold, dean and McCurdy Professor of Law. "This lecture enables
our students and the community the opportunity to hear and interact
with leading jurists from across the country such as Judge Cabranes."
Cabranes was appointed to the Court of Appeals in 1994 after
serving as a U.S. District Judge for the District of Connecticut
for 15 years. Prior to that he was general counsel of Yale University.
He also has practiced law in New York City; taught administrative
law and international law at Rutgers University Law School; and
been a trustee of Yale, Colgate University and Columbia University.
A native of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Cabranes is a graduate of
Columbia College, Yale Law School and Cambridge University.
Established in 1980, the Sumner Canary Lecture series honors
the memory of Sumner Canary, a distinguished Cleveland lawyer,
jurist and 1927 graduate of the School of Law at CWRU.
