CWRU to host wireless technology conference

Senior executives from Microsoft and Palm Computing are among more than two dozen speakers coming to CWRU for the second annual No Strings Attached Conference (NSA) April 9-11 in Thwing Center at Case Western Reserve University.

More than 300 conference participants—college faculty and campus IT personnel, along with technology industry executives and entrepreneurs—are expected to attend the conference, which is dedicated to the exploration and application of wireless technology and personal digital assistants (PDAs) in higher education.

Drexel University president Constantine Papadakis will give the keynote address at noon April 9 in Thwing Center. Drexel is an acknowledged leader in the campus movement to wireless and ubiquitous computing, according to Lev Gonick, CWRU vice president and chief information officer.

Microsoft higher education evangelist John Dubois will be the featured speaker at 7 p.m. April 10 during a special evening presentation at the Great Lakes Sciences Center. Campus Computing Project founder Kenneth C. Green and Palm Computing Vice President for Education Mike Lorion also are among those scheduled to speak.

"The No Strings Attached conference reflects our commitment to ubiquitous computing," Gonick said. "It provides a unique forum for individuals and institutions engaged in innovative classroom and campus projects."

NSA proceedings, panels and keynote addresses will be streamed live over the Internet.

At 1 p.m. April 11, a national satellite and webcast of the award-winning Ahead of the Curve, formerly Ready2Net, broadcast will originate from the conference. Ahead of the Curve is a joint collaboration of CWRU, the Campus Computing Project and California State University-Monterey Bay.

In addition to wireless technology and PDAs, the conference also includes sessions on handheld computers and tablet PCs on teaching, learning, research, faculty activities and student life. NSA is organized around five tracks: health science and hospitals, academic applications, ERP and administrative services and libraries and museums.
