Gharib, Times journalist to visit CWRU

Two nationally known journalists—including CWRU alumna Susie Gharib—will give lectures at CWRU next week.

Gharib, the New York-based co-anchor of "Nightly Business Report," will return to Case Western Reserve University to give the free lecture, "War and the Economy," at 12:30 p.m. March 28 in 14 Crawford Hall.

New York Times investigative reporter Kurt Eichenwald will give the free talk, "Corporate Corruption and the Collapse of an American Fantasy" at noon Monday, March 24, in 206 Clark Hall at Case Western Reserve University.

Eichenwald's visit to CWRU is part of the Susie Gharib Distinguished Lectureship in Journalism series that was established by a gift from Gharib and her husband Fred Nazem.

Gharib is a 1972 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of CWRU. Visits to campus by distinguished lecturers under this program form the cornerstone of an advanced journalism class in the College of Arts and Sciences. Gharib, who graduated magna cum laude in 1972 from Flora Stone Mather College, has gained a reputation for her incisive interviews with the "Who's Who" of corporate America and the world. Since 1998, she has reported on business, Wall Street and international market trends and the economy for PBS's "Nightly Business Report." She has earned the Gracie Allen Award for Best Anchor and is listed in Who's Who in America.

Prior to anchoring "Nightly Business Report," Gharib was a reporter for CNBC's "Today's Business" and was anchor for "Market Watch." She has worked for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Newsweek, Associated Press, Fortune Magazine, Financial News Network and the "Eyewitness News" at ABC's New York station.

Gharib also holds a master's degree in international affairs degree from Columbia University.

For more than a decade, Eichenwald has written about white-collar crime and corporate corruption, including stories on Archer Daniels Midland and Enron.

His work has earned two prestigious George Polk Awards for excellence in journalism, and he was a finalist for the 2000 Pulitzer Prize.

Eichenwald also is the author of two books, Serpent on the Rock and The Informant: A True Story. In addition to the Susie Gharib Distinguished Lectureship in Journalism, sponsors for Gharib's visit are CWRU's Public Affairs Forum and the Center for Policy Studies.
