President Edward M. Hundert has announced the appointment of
the committee that will advise in the national search for a dean
of the College of Arts and Sciences.
\Members of the committee include Cynthia Beall, professor of
anthropology; Georgia Cowart, associate professor and chair of
music; Jessica Fong, a communication science and psychology major;
Arthur H. Heuer, University professor and professor of materials
science and engineering; Kathryn Howard, chair of the Staff Advisory
Council; Gerald Korngold, professor and dean of the law school;
Bruce Latimer, director of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History;
Robert D. Storey, CWRU trustee and partner in Thompson Hine LLP;
and Cyrus Taylor, professor of physics.
CWRU Provost and University Vice President James W. Wagner and
Frank Rhodes will serve on the committee in an ex officio capacity.
Rhodes is a principal of the Washington Advisory Group and has
served as president of Cornell University and, before that, as
dean of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the
University of Michigan.
In addition, Rhodes, along with Sheldon Hackney, former president
of the University of Pennsylvania and former chairman of the National
Endowment for the Humanities, and Frank Robinson, director of
Cornell University's Johnson Museum of Art, will lead a small
team of consultants who will meet with representatives of the
many constituencies within the College of Arts and Sciences.
"This search is especially important in view of the new levels
of investment to be made in the College and the expectation that
the College will lead our entire institution in important areas
of educational advancement, in expanding areas of research and
scholarship and in a renewed commitment to liberal learning as
a foundation for all of our educational disciplines," Hundert
said.
Nominations for individuals to be considered for the deanship
can be sent to any member of the search committee and will be
handled in confidence. Although this will be a national search,
internal candidates also are encouraged to apply.
Samuel Savin, arts and sciences' dean since 2001, announced earlier
this year that he would leave his post February 1. Sandra Russ,
professor of psychology, is serving as interim dean.
