This semester, Gallagher will spend a day shadowing President
Edward M. Hundert.
The three-day raffle raised more than $1,400-three times more
money than last year. Donations will be used to buy books from
the CWRU bookstore for several Cleveland city schools, including
Buhrer Elementary, Central Middle School, The Cleveland School
of the Arts high school and Paul Revere.
"President Hundert's participation is truly inspiring," said
Elijah Petersen, president of the Mortar Board National College
Senior Honor Society at CWRU and a senior undergraduate student
in the department of civil engineering and the department of psychology.
"In addition to volunteering his time, the president's office
has agreed to match all of the donations we have raised."
Mortar Board members sold raffle tickets over three days in Thwing
Center and in the residential village dining halls. Students were
able to pay cash, use CWRU points or CWRU dining points.
"This raffle gives us the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution
to the Cleveland community," Petersen said. "We also were one
of the 14 chapters nationally to receive a national grant from
The National Mortar Board Foundation.
"In addition, the President for a Day raffle sale is especially
a match for Mortar Board since our national project is "Reading
is Leading." With the donated books, Mortar Board members are
also going to spend February 20 reading to students at Paul Revere
School."
Membership in Mortar Board is based on scholarship, leadership
and service. This year, the CWRU chapter has 38 members.
"We would like to thank all the sponsors and offer a special
thanks to Ellen Caruso in President Hundert's office for helping
us with this project; President Hundert for his participation
and enthusiasm; to Richard Jamieson, director of campus services
for allowing us to accept campus points from people who didn't
have cash to buy raffle tickets; to all of our sponsors; and,
finally, to all of the students who participated in the raffle
sale," Petersen said.
Other winners in the raffle were Kathryn Svigals, a freshmen,
and Daniel Liteplo, a junior. Both won first prize and received
gift certificates donated by area restaurants including Panini's
Grill, Chipoltle Mexican Grill, Madstone Cinema, Giant Eagle,
Mongolian Barbeque and Jillians.
