Mead's daughter to speak

Mary Catherine Bateson-writer, linguist and cultural anthropologist-will give a speech entitled, "Friends and Strangers: Difference, Distinctiveness and Recognition" at CWRU at 4:30 p.m. today in Strosacker Auditorium. The College Scholars Program is sponsoring her free talk.

The daughter of the late Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson, Bateson retired in 2002 as the Clarence J. Robinson Professor in Anthropology and English at George Mason University. She currently works as a visiting professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Career fair slated for Feb. 27

The CWRU Career Center's annual Spring Career Fair will take place noon to 4 p.m. February 27 in Thwing Center.

The fair usually attracts 500 to 700 undergraduate and graduate students and more than 50 employers.

Preceding the fair is an invitational networking breakfast with recruiters and CWRU faculty and staff. The breakfast features Nancy S. Ahlrichs, who will speak on "Becoming an Employer of Choice." Ahlrichs has over 20 years of experience in human resources, which she applies to her own consulting practice and to the column she writes for the Indianapolis Business Journal.

From 1-4 p.m. February 28, CWRU will co-sponsor Hire Intelligence, a career fair focused on liberal arts students that will take place in the Bridge View Room of Windows on the River in Cleveland.

The College of Wooster, Oberlin College, Ashland University and Hiram College are the other sponsors of Hire Intelligence, which attracts about 100 students.

Severance available for meetings

Severance Hall has several areas available for CWRU department meetings and events.

The recently renovated historic landmark not only provides venues for performances and concerts but also accommodates a variety of meeting and event styles as well, including rooms for small department meetings and large conferences.

CWRU departments receive discounts off of select spaces at Severance Hall, including free use of the Severance Restaurant and Terrace Room for daytime meetings and events. Minimum catering is required. Exclusive catering is provided by Restaurant Associates.

Health policy to be discussed

At 1 p.m. March 20 in E301 of the School of Medicine, Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen's Health Research Group, will speak on current health policy controversies.

Wolfe is a graduate of CWRU School of Medicine and is adjunct professor of internal medicine at CWRU. He is director and cofounder of the D.C.-based organization Public Citizen's Health Research Group and author of the book, Worst Pills, Best Pills.

New restaurant opens on campus

A new restaurant, Flower, is now located at 11401 Bellflower Road in the space formerly used by That Place on Bellflower.

The cuisine at Flower is eclectic with a Latin influence. The restaurant also offers happy hour half-priced drinks from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the bar.

Flower is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 5-10 p.m. Sunday.
