Wykle featured in calendar of African-American nurses
by Jeff Bendix

May Wykle, the dean and Florence Cellar professor at CWRU's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, is one of 12 African-American nurses featured in Aetna Insurance Company's African-American History Calendar for 2003.

Each month in the calendar profiles an African American prominent in some aspect of nursing. Wykle, in September, is described as "The Educator." Accompanying text summarizes her career in nursing, focusing on her work in geriatric nursing.

"Geriatrics can be very exciting," Wykle states in the text. "I always tell young people that what you do today to make the quality of life better for aging adults adds to your own longevity and sense of well-being."

Among others featured in the calendar are Dorothy L. Powell, associate dean for nursing in the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences at Howard University; Linda Burnes Bolton, vice president and chief nursing officer of Cedars-Sinai Health System and Research Institute in Los Angeles; and Marvel King Davis, clinical nurse specialist in psychiatry and service manager for dual diagnosis at Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital.

"I'm extremely flattered to be included among such an outstanding group of nursing professionals," said Wykle. "I hope this project will help more people, especially minority individuals, to explore nursing as a career."

Peg Garrity, project manager, said Aetna has been producing calendars featuring African Americans in a variety of fields since 1982.

"When I proposed to our chairman, John W. Rowe that we use this year's calendar to highlight African Americans in nursing, he immediately suggested that we include Dean Wykle, whom he has known for some time," Garrity said.

She added that the individuals featured on the calendar were chosen with the help of the National Black Nurses Association and the Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations.

Aetna has printed about 40,000 of the calendars. Most are distributed free to schools and other nonprofit institutions, Garrity said.

Wykle has been on the faculty of the Bolton School since 1969 and dean since 2001. She is a resident of Solon.

Copies of the calendar are available by calling 860-273-0509. It also can be viewed on the Web at http://www.aetna.com/diversity/aahcalendar/index.html.
