JASON sets out to sea, shore

The University's Center for Science and Mathematics Education invites the CWRU community to venture with JASON XIV: From Shore to Sea and JASON explorer Robert Ballard, founder of the R.M.S. Titanic wreckage, to the Channel Islands region of California.

With reservations, faculty, staff, students and the public can view the JASON live-action adventure on three large screens at 4 p.m. weekdays from January 27 through February 7 in Ford Auditorium of the Allen Memorial Library.

Phys ed wellness series to start

The physical education department's 2003 wellness series will feature classes in cardio-kickboxing, dance aerobics, yoga and tai chi.

The kickboxing class is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m., while dance aerobics will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Both run January 28 though April 24. Yoga will be conducted on Wednesdays from 5:45-7:15 p.m. January 29 through April 9, and the tai chi class is from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. February 4 through May 1.

All classes are in the aerobics room of the Veale Center. The cost is $45 for kickboxing, aerobics and tai chi and $30 for yoga.

Professor to discuss African art

Constantine Petridis, CWRU's new assistant professor of art history and assistant curator of African art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, will talk about changes at the museum as it prepares to reopen its gallery of African art to the public.

His talk, "Uniting Text and Context: On Exhibiting African Art," begins at 4:30 p.m. January 23 in 206 Clark Hall. Refreshments start at 4 p.m.

Petridis' free talk is part of the ongoing Work-in-Progress Series, sponsored by the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities.

CWRUcards get vending discount

CWRUcardholders who use their CWRUcard at campus vending machines through January 31 will receive an automatic 10 percent discount.

The vending machines are located in the law school; Peter B. Lewis Building; outside the cafZ in the Biomedical Research Building; at the Sears Grab'n'Go; Thwing Center; Clark Tower; and Kusch, Michelson and Glaser houses.

An active CWRUcharge, CWRUcash or CWRUcash dining account is required for CWRUcard purchases at these vending machines.

Address change must be reported

All J-1 research scholars, students and their dependents must report any change of U.S. address to the Office of Foreign Faculty and Scholars or International Student Services within 10 days of such change. For details, call 368-4289 or 368-2517.

African-American exhibit opens

The Mather Gallery will feature the paintings of Marc L. Burnett from Tennessee Tech University and Joe Dowell of Placitas, N. M., during "Content of Character," the gallery's annual African-American Heritage Celebration.

The free exhibit begins at 5 p.m. January 24, with an artists' reception and continues through February 28. Hours for the gallery, located in Thwing Center, are noon to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Self-defense courses to begin

CWRU's Protective Services will be offering Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) classes for basic self-defense February 3, 10, 17 and 24 in the lower level of Leutner Commons.

The classes are free of charge to any female.

An advanced RAD course, which has the basic RAD class as a prerequisite, will be offered in April. Dates are forthcoming.

Glennan nominations needed

The University Center for Innovation in Teaching Education (UCITE) invites faculty members to nominate their untenured, tenure-tracked peers, who demonstrate excellent teaching and scholarly abilities, for the Glennan Fellows Program.

The deadline for nominations is January 21, with proposals for Glennan projects from the candidates due by February 17.

Former student to perform

Kelly Chapman, a former member of the CWRU Gospel Ensemble, will perform at 7 p.m. January 19 at Nighttown, 12383 Cedar Road.

Chapman has performed with Grover Washington Jr., Bobby Womack and Yolanda Adams and other recording artists.

Seminar to connect portfolio and health care management

John F.P. Bridges, recently appointed assistant professor in the Division of Health Services Research in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Medicine at CWRU, will present a research seminar titled "Portfolio management and the three E's (epidemiology, economics and ethics)."

The seminar will be from noon until 1 p.m. January 28 in the medical school's Robbins Lecture Hall, E501. Lunch will be provided, beginning at noon, and it is open to the CWRU community.

A health economist, Bridges applies portfolio management concepts to various aspects of health care management and research. He holds his Ph.D. from the City University of New York where he studied health economics and finance theory. Prior to joining the medical school, he lectured at Weatherhead School of Management.
