A new collaborative project, One Week in the Life of University
Circle, will be launched the week of September 2228. Twenty-five
project teams will chronicle one week of activities and life experiences
in University Circle, the one square mile east of Cleveland known
as the home to museums, colleges, galleries, public gardens, performing
arts facilities, teaching hospitals and religious venues.
Students from the Cleveland Institute of Art's Digital Media
program, will collaborate with students from CWRU's New Media
Center and the Cleveland Institute of Music, as well as employees
of he Cleveland Museum of Art with the support of University Circle
Inc. and other organizations to capture the cultural and educational
experiences found in University Circle.
The goal of the project is to demonstrate how partnerships between
different institutions can be used to celebrate divergent University
Circle experiences. The project also will demonstrate from the
eyes of University Circle students, visitors and employees the
social, economic, cultural and historic value of University Circle
to the larger Cleveland community. In addition, it will explore
how digital media technology can be used to document, communicate
and virtually express the human experiences associated with the
Circle.
Students will challenge their creativity and ingenuity in the
use of new technology as a means of expression and communication
using video, 3-D animation, virtual reality caves, multimedia
projects, audio treatments, photography and other forms of public
art. Students, faculty, technologists, engineers, writers, producers,
community members, naturalists, historians, school-aged children
and senior citizens will be participating in separate projects
directed by students.
"This project continues to build justification for a centralized
media center to service University Circle, as well as the surrounding
region of cultural, educational and business enterprises," said
Thomas Mulready, director of the project. "The One Week project
will serve to demonstrate how cutting edge digital media can enlighten,
educate, entertain and engage."
The week of activity will be documented and made available through
several media channels including ideastream. All the final projects
will be on display during Holiday CircleFest, University Circle's
annual free open house, to be held December 8, from 16 p.m.
Exhibits will also continue through the holiday season at various
locations throughout University Circle.
