The Medical Alumni Association of CWRU has honored three alumni
of the School of Medicine with awards recognizing their outstanding
careers and contributions.
Frank M. Yatsu received the Distinguished Alumni Award, Edward
C. White was honored with the Clifford J. Vogt, ('34) Alumni Service
Award and Marshall Klaus received the Special (Medical Alumni
Association) Board of Trustees Award.
Frank M. Yatsu
Yatsu, who earned his medical degree in 1959, received the Distinguished
Alumni Award. Yatsu is professor and chairman emeritus of the
Department of Neurology and a member of the Graduate School of
Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas-Houston Medical
School /University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center. He
is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of neurology
and serves on numerouseditorial boards and advisory panels.
While active in all aspects of clinical neurology, Yatsu's specialized
clinical interests are in stroke,Parkinson's disease and dementia.
His research interests are directed at a molecular understanding
of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. He is an author or editor
of several textbooks on stroke, including Stroke: Pathophysiology,
Diagnosis, and Management; One Hundred Maxims in Neurology;
Prognosis of Neurological Disorders; and Cerebral Ischemia
and Basic Mechanisms.
Edward C. White
White, who earned his medical degree in 1959, received the Clifford
J. Vogt ('34) Alumni Service Award for his volunteer efforts on
behalf of the medical school. White is medical director of the
Baldwin-Wallace College Health Service and an associate clinical
professor in the Department of Family Medicine at CWRU. He has
received numerous awards for his teaching and doctoring, including
being named one of the "100 Best Doctors in Cleveland" in Cleveland
Magazine in 1996 and 1998 and receiving what is now known as the
Special (CWRU Medical Alumni Association) Board of Trustees Award
in 1989. He previously served on the Medical Alumni Association
Board of Trustees from 1973 to 1976 and 1984 to1990, serving as
president in the last year of that term. He has chaired the Medical
Annual Fund committee for the past two years.
Marshall Klaus
Klaus, a 1951 graduate of the School of Medicine, received the
Special (Medical Alumni Association) Board of Trustees Award.
An internationally renowned neonatologist, Klaus is a professor
of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco.
He and his long-time friend and colleague, John H. Kennell, who
now is professor emeritus of pediatrics at CWRU, are best known
for their groundbreaking research on mother-infant bonding and
the importance of continuous support for mothers during childbirth.
With his social-worker wife, Phyllis, and Kennell, Klaus has
written several books, including Bonding: Building the Foundations
of Secure Attachment and Independence, and Mothering the Mother:
How a Doula Can Help You Have a Shorter, Easier, and Healthier
Birth. With Avroy A. Fanaroff, CWRU professor of pediatrics, he
is co-editor of Care of the High-Risk Neonate, a mainstay
in intensive care nurseries now in its fifth edition, and The
Year Book of Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine. His latest book
is 1998's Your Amazing Newborn, which he wrote with his
wife. Klaus has received numerous awards for his contributions
as a researcher and educator here and abroad, including the Distinguished
Alumnus Award from the Medical Alumni Association in 1986.
