New Euclid Avenue, Adelbert Road crosswalks to help connect campus

New colored, concrete crosswalks at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Adelbert Road are expected to be ready for pedestrians around the end of August.

The project, which is part of the University's master plan, consists of laying embossed, colored concrete to create three easily identifiable crosswalks, two crossing Euclid Avenue and one crossing Adelbert Road. Each crosswalk will be about 10 feet wide.

According to Kenneth Basch, vice president for campus planning and operations, the new crosswalks will enhance safety for pedestrians and create a greater sense of connection between the north and south sides of campus.

Work on the crosswalks, which was expected to take between five and seven weeks to complete, started in late July. Weather and other factors could lengthen the timeline, according to Basch.

Construction was to take place predominantly in the evenings, but some work has been necessary during business hours. A temporary crosswalk across Euclid Avenue has been available throughout the project.

For a few weeks during construction, eastbound RTA buses have not been allowed to make right turns from Euclid Avenue onto Adelbert Road and have been rerouted onto Cornell Road. Temporary stops have been available near the intersection of Adelbert Road and Circle Drive. Signs identifying the relocation of the temporary stops have been posted at the current stops on Adelbert Road. Northbound bus traffic on Adelbert Road has continued throughout the project.

In addition, current turning lanes on Adelbert Road and Euclid Avenue have been temporarily restricted.
