Campus memorial service to commemorate terrorist attacks
of Sept. 11, 2001
by Laura M. Massie

At precisely 8:46 a.m. on September 11, one year to the day and time that the first hijacked airliner deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center during the first wave of terrorist attacks, CWRU's new president Edward M. Hundert and University Circle partners will hold a Remembrance Memorial to commemorate the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

The memorial will be held at the Heart of the Campus, the quad area surrounded by Severance Hall, Kelvin Smith Library and Thwing Center. All students, faculty and staff are invited and encouraged to attend.

In addition, the University will set up a "Wall of Remembrance" that circles the Heart of the Campus area two weeks prior to the event so members of the campus community can write down their feelings and reflections about September 11 on the wall. The wall will remain for an additional two weeks.

The Heart of the Campus and Wall of Remembrance will serve as a backdrop to the activities planned for this year. The University will simulcast WCLV radio's broadcast of the nationwide airing of "Mozart's Requiem" beginning at 8:56 a.m. as part of a national participatory event to acknowledge the time when the first plane hit the trade center. The campus community is then invited to stay for a moment of silence, led by Hundert, immediately following the broadcast at 9:57 a.m. Following brief remarks by Hundert, the CWRU Men's Glee Club will sing "America the Beautiful."

"We want to create an atmosphere for that day in which our students, faculty and staff can come together in solidarity and solemnity and link arms for a moment of silence to remember the September 11 victims," Hundert said. "And while this is a devastating chapter in our country's history, there is so much we can learn from each other as a result of this horrific event."

A more formal memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. at Garfield's Monument in Lakeview Cemetery with EMS, police, firefighters and rescue workers from Cleveland, Cleveland Heights and East Cleveland. Free shuttles will be provided from University Circle for those members of the campus community who would like to attend.
