CWRU's Dean of Undergraduate Admission William Conley will be
leaving the University at the end of June to become dean of enrollment
and academic services for the Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins
University.
A search committee will begin work soon to identify a successor.
"As dean of undergraduate admission here since 1990, Bill has
contributed immensely to the improvement in recruitment results
that we have experienced," CWRU's Interim President James Wagner
said in a statement. "His energy and his understanding of the
recruiting environment have been crucial. He has also played a
major role in activities over the past two years to stimulate
another round of improvements in undergraduate recruitment for
this year."
"I have really enjoyed my 12 years at CWRU," Conley said. "My
wife, Annie, and I will sorely miss our many CWRU friends and
the vitality of the Cleveland community. I want to thank everyone
for all their help in making the undergraduate admission effort
so successful over the years."
Under Conley's leadership, the freshman class has grown nearly
150 percent from 508 students in 1987-1988 to 738 this past year.
The class arriving this fall currently numbers 860. In addition,
the number of undergraduate applications has nearly tripled since
1988, going from 1,709 to 4,663.
The quality of the freshman class also has improved in Conley's
tenure. Composite SAT scores for incoming undergraduates before
he joined CWRU were 1100-1300. Now they are 1260-1420. Similarly,
66 percent of freshmen in 1987-1988 were in the top 10 percent
of their high school classes, compared to 71 percent this year.
"We will miss Bill's enthusiasm and his astute, professional
guidance for our admissions efforts. He has been a wonderful colleague,
and we all owe him our appreciation for having strengthened our
recruitment efforts," Wagner said. "Hopkins has chosen wisely,
and we all wish him success there."
Conley has played a major role in the President's Commission
on Undergraduate Education and Life, which began a fundamental
review of undergraduate education and how CWRU can distinguish
its undergraduate programs two years ago. In addition, he has
been involved in ongoing efforts to rejuvenate student life on
campus and in a marketing and visibility study for the entire
University.
"I expect that, in seeking a successor to Bill, we will once
again look for a person who can provide leadership for Undergraduate
Admission that is consistent with our academic, campus life and
marketing strategies," Wagner said.
Conley served as admissions director at Drew University in Madison,
N.J., for six years before joining CWRU. He also spent four years
as assistant and associate director of admissions at Lafayette
College in Easton, Pa. He received a bachelor's degree in history
from Colgate University
