in comparative judicial and dispute resolution reform to the legal community
in the city of Ahmedabad, India. He will educate current and aspiring
Indian attorneys and judges about trends in comparative judicial and dispute
resolution reform. The Gujarat Law Society and Institute for Arbitration,
Mediation, Legal Education and Development (AMLEAD) will help develop
the curriculum. "I am deeply honored to be awarded this scholarship," Chodosh said. "I have long drawn on the experience and professional struggles of Indian lawyers and judges in my own work, and the Fulbright provides me a unique opportunity to give back to a reform-minded legal community in a time of profound need." Fulbright Senior Scholarships are offered to individuals with 10 years or more experience in their field. "Our law school is proud to have one of its faculty chosen for this prestigious program," said Gerald Korngold, dean and McCurdy Professor of Law. "The experience Professor Chodosh will gain as a result of the Fulbright scholarship will enhance the visibility of the Cox Center and will further strengthen its role as a leader in teaching legal and judicial reform." The ultimate goal of his curriculum, Chodosh explained, is to help the Indian judicial system reduce its enormous backlog of cases by applying rigorous mediation mechanisms to civil and commercial litigation. In 1999 the Indian Parliament created legislation for implementing mediation through amendments to the nation's Civil Procedures Code. In 1998 Chodosh co-authored, with former Indian Supreme Court Chief Justice A.M. Prahdi, a study of the Indian civil justice system. While in India he will research a book on civil justice reform in South Asia. A member of the CWRU law faculty since 1993, Chodosh has directed the Cox Center since 1998. In that role he has organized numerous symposia and conferences and developed a concentration in the study of international law. Articles he has written or co-authored have appeared in the Iowa Law Review, the New York University School of Law's Journal of International Law and Politics and the CWRU Journal of International Law. Chodosh holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a J.D. from Yale Law School. Return to the online edition of the 5-9 Campus News. |
