Stein wins Hovorka Prize
by Laura M. Massie

Herman D. Stein, provost emeritus and the John Reynolds Harkness Professor Emeritus of Social Administration and former dean of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, was awarded the Frank and Dorothy Humel Hovorka Prize at CWRU's commencement convocation.

The prize was created by Dorothy Humel Hovorka, a member of CWRU's board of trustees whose husband, the late Frank Hovorka, served for many years as a distinguished member of the faculty of the CWRU chemistry department.

Stein's career as a social worker, scholar, teacher, author, University leader and adviser on community and international issues is now in its seventh decade. After 16 years on the faculty of the Columbia University School of Social Work, Stein came to CWRU in 1964 as dean of the School of Applied Social Sciences, since renamed the Mandel School. He subsequently served as provost for the social and behavioral sciences and twice as University provost; as University vice president; and since 1974 as University professor, the highest CWRU faculty rank attainable.

Locally, in 1968-69 he chaired the Mayor's Commission on the Crisis in Welfare in Cleveland. Stein has a long record of close work with UNICEF, including five years in full-time service and eight years as senior adviser to the executive director. He also founded and directed for five years the Global Currents Lecture Series at CWRU. He currently sponsors the annual Herman D. Stein Lectureship in International Social Welfare at the Mandel School.

In addition to provost emeritus, Stein also is a University professor emeritus and dean emeritus. In 1994, he became the 12th recipient of the University Medal, CWRU's highest honor. Pomp and circumstance
