Parking assignments shift with construction, new rates set

Nearly 500 faculty, staff and students are switching parking spaces as a result of new construction on campus.

Also, parking rates for 2002-03 have been set and reflect an overall 6 percent increase for CWRU-owned lots. The increase will help defray the cost of the construction of the new north campus parking structure. University Circle Inc., which owns lots 43, 45 and 49, has decided to implement varying, more aggressive rate increases.

With the Peter B. Lewis Building opening this summer, Weatherhead School of Management faculty and staff have been moving from various lots on the south campus mostly into lot 29, the parking structure under Kelvin Smith Library and Severance Hall, and lot 54, the parking garage near the corner of Ford and Euclid avenues.

"It's been a challenging year for the Access Services staff as they transferred the WSOM staff to their new parking locations near the Peter B. Lewis building," said Dick Jamieson, director of campus services. "We'd like to let everyone know that we have appreciated their cooperation during this time. We're looking forward to the completion of our new parking structure, which will be an enhancement to the overall parking program."

Weatherhead commuter students are also shifting from various south campus areas to lots on the north side. These include S-29, S-54 and the commuter (C) lots on Euclid Avenue east of Ford.

"Given the layout of our campus, which is not the most compact and is mixed with other institutions and public areas, parking is a challenge for all of us at any time," said Margaret Perry, manager of parking. "We are always doing our best-with the spaces available and the demand that we have-to provide people with what they want and what they need."

To make room on the north campus for management students, some commuters with classes primarily on the south campus will be able to sign up for permits in lot 47, which will become

C-south. This lot is at the northwest corner of Adelbert and Murray Hill roads.

As a result of the commuter move, some faculty and staff from lot 47 will transfer to parking spaces left open by the management employees or to other lots as spaces are available.

Approximately 200 people will be affected by this change. Due to increased demand for parking at the Cleveland Museum of Art, CWRU also will no longer have access to 75 parking spaces in the museum's garage after the end of this school year. The University will lose another 12 spaces in lot 64 at the corner of Deering Avenue and 109th Street as a result of a change in the agreement between University Circle Inc. and the adjacent apartment building. Access Services is in the process of contacting permit holders in these lots to inform them of available options.

Approximately 280 employees and students who park in lot 46, near the American Heart Association and Finnegan Field, also will move at the end of the fall semester in preparation for the construction of the new 800-plus space parking garage. Permit holders will be contacted this fall and transferred to temporary assignme
