Three recent graduates of CWRU's Mandel School of Applied Social
Sciences are among six winners of a national competition in doctoral
dissertation research.
The three Mandel School winners and their theses are: Susan A.
Cole, for "Security of Attachment of Infants in Foster Care;"
David O'Malley for "An Examination of Factors Influencing College
Students' Self-Reported Likelihood of Calling for Assistance for
a Fellow Student Who Has Engaged in High-Risk Alcohol Consumption;"
and Meeyoung Oh Min, for "Factors Related to Psychiatric Hospitalization
and Repeated Crisis Service Use by Dually Diagnosed Persons."
Cole and O'Malley received their doctoral degrees in 2001, while
Min completed hers in 2000.
The winners presented their research findings at the National
Symposium on Doctoral Research in Social Work held recently at
The Ohio State University College of Social Work in Columbus,
which sponsors the competition.
"We are extremely proud that half of the winners in this year's
competition are our graduates," said Grover "Cleve" Gilmore, interim
dean of the Mandel School. "We think it is representative of the
outstanding research performed by our students as well as our
faculty."
Competition winners are selected by a review committee, which
bases its decisions on the rigor of the research methods employed,
the theoretical grounding of the research, the rationale for conducting
the study, the research's importance for advancing social work
knowledge and the study's contribution to social work practice.
The symposium has been presented annually since 1985.
