Senior named to USA Today All-USA academic first team

CWRU Senior Anne Han, 22, was named to the first team of USA Today's 2002 All-USA College Academic Team. She is among only 20 college students recognized for their outstanding achievements and is the only college or university student from Ohio on the first team.

Upon entering CWRU in the fall of 1998, Han-an international studies major with a focus on China-was recognized with two of CWRU's highest honors for incoming students. She was awarded an Adelbert/Squire full-tuition scholarship in recognition of her promising academic career and was honored as one of the 20-25 students selected annually from 500 applications for admission to CWRU's School of Medicine as a Pre-Professional Scholar.

"Her brilliance, motivation, discipline and creativity have carried her from one success to another," said Margaret Robinson, CWRU dean of undergraduate studies.

Han said her goal is to leave her mark as an advocate for public health. She is already on her way. She challenged the tobacco industry last summer by urging the International Organization of Standards to increase involvement by health and non-tobacco industry officials in designing global standards for tobacco use and production. She called for the changes in the paper, "Challenging Public Health Acceptability of Current International Standards on Tobacco Products: Paving the Way for Strengthened Cooperation," published in Tobacco Control, a specialty of the British Medical Journal publishing group.

Her research was based on a project as a summer intern with the World Health Organization in Switzerland.
