Trustees approve plan for affiliation with UHC

CWRU's Board of Trustees authorized its chairman and the University's interim president to enter into a 15-month affiliation agreement with University Hospitals of Cleveland (UHC), governing collaboration in medical education and research. The agreement would be retroactive to January 1, 2002.

The boards of UHC and University Hospitals Health System will meet within the coming week to consider approving the agreement. Officials from both institutions said they look forward to working toward a long-term affiliation agreement during this period.

"The action of the University's Board of Trustees is a clear demonstration of its sincere efforts to create a new affiliation," said James W. Wagner, interim president of CWRU. "There is a strong desire here to have this lead to an exciting, new, long-term partnership with University Hospitals as part of the University's broader vision for medical education, research and service to the community."

The proposed agreement would continue prior relationships for medical education and research, including clinical clerkships for CWRU medical students. Specific terms of the proposed agreement have yet to be released.

""During this timeframe, we look forward to working with CWRU to articulate a vision for, and the substance of, a long-term partnership." said Farah M. Walters, president and chief executive officer of UHHS and UHC.
