SPARTAN SCOREScompiled by Creg Jantz, sports information directorMEN'S FENCINGThe CWRU men's fencing team traveled to Michigan last Saturday to take part in Central Team Duals hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy. The Spartans finished 3-1 in dual competition. They defeated University of Michigan 20-7 (Sabre: 5-4, Foil: 9-0, Epee: 6-3) in their first dual, beat Detroit Mercy in their second 23-4 (Sabre: 9-0, Foil: 7-2, Epee: 7-2), fell to Wayne State University 23-4 (Sabre: 1-8, Foil: 1-8, Epee: 2-7), and then defeated Michigan State University 14-13 (Sabre: 6-3, Foil: 6-3, Epee: 2-7) in their final dual. Top performers for CWRU included sophomore Steve Buchi (Newark, DE) who finished 9-3 in the Sabre, senior Marc Gurarie (Shaker Heights) who finished 9-3 in the Foil, and junior Brian Moore (North Olmsted) who also finished 9-3 in the Epee. NEXT MATCH: @ Ohio State University February 9. WOMEN'S FENCINGThe Spartan women joined the men last Saturday in Detroit at the Central Team Duals. CWRU's women finished 1-3 overall. They lost to the University of Michigan 18-9 (Sabre: 2-7, Foil: 2-7, Epee: 5-4) in round one, defeated the University of Detroit Mercy 18-6 (Sabre: 6-0, Foil: 7-2, Epee: 5-4) in their second dual, lost to Wayne State University 16-10 (Sabre: 2-6, Foil: 4-5, Epee 4-5) in the third round, and lost to Michigan State University 17-10 (Sabre: 0-9, Foil: 3-6, Epee: 7-2) in their final dual. Top performers for CWRU included junior Katherine Elizabeth Watts (Rogers, AK), who finished 10-2 in the Epee, and junior Elizabeth Persson (Havre De Grace, MD) and senior Elizabeth Elder (Cincinnati), who both finished 7-5 in the Foil. NEXT MATCH: @ Ohio State University February 9. MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVINGThe CWRU men's swimming and diving team hosted Wittenberg University last Saturday at the CWRU Natatorium in the Veale Center. They won 142 to 69. The Spartans were led by multiple event winner senior Jon Gellin (Buffalo, NY), who won the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:59.9 and the 500-yard Freestyle with a time of 4:50.28. CWRU also won the 200-yard Medley Relay with a mark of 1:40.47. Members of that squad included senior Matt Anderson (Fishers, IN), sophomore Andrew Detwiler (Ft. Atkinson, WI), senior Mike Iacchei (Bel Air, MD) and freshman Kevin Day (Cuyahoga Falls). Matt Anderson also had an individual win in the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 55.24. NEXT MEET: UAA Championships @ Emory University February 14-16. WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVINGThe Spartan women also swam against Wittenberg University on Saturday at home. CWRU won 155-84. The Spartans were led by multiple event winner freshman Elaine Hillemeyer (Carmel, IN) who won the 50-yard Freestyle with a mark of 25.57 and the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:01.87. Hillemeyer was also a member of the women's 200-yard Freestyle Relay team that won with a mark of 1:41.43. The other three members were senior Veronica Luri (Brecksville), senior Kelly Alexander (Huntsville, AL), and sophomore Kristen Prijatel (Mentor). Alexander and Luri also posted individual wins. Luri won the 100-yard Freestyle with a time of 56.72 and Alexander placed first in the 500-yard Freestyle at 5:09.63. NEXT MEET: UAA Championships @ Emory University February 14-16. MEN'S INDOOR TRACKThe CWRU men's indoor track team co-hosted
the CWRU Invitational last Saturday at Sudeck Track in the Veale Center.
Baldwin Wallace College, John Carroll University, Oberlin College, Thiel
College and the College of Wooster all participated. The Spartans won
the Invitational with a score of 144 points. First place finishers for
CWRU included sophomore Matt Finnerty (Poland, OH), who won the 3,000-meter
run with a time of 9:02.56; junior Pat Francis (Exton, PA) who won the
55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.49; senior Thomas Dominic (Cincinnati),
who won the high jump with a mark of 1.98 meters; sophomore Dan Haylett
(Mantua OH) who won the Pole Vault with a mark of 4.42 meters; senior
Kyle Whitling (Boliva, OH), who won the shot put with a throw of 14.74
meters; and senior Farzad Mazloomi (Cincinnati),who won the weight throw
with a mark of 13.58 meters. NEXT MEET: @ Oberlin College Invitational
WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACKThe Spartan women also took part in their own six-team invitational at Sudeck Track. CWRU finished third with 83 points. Baldwin Wallace College won the event with a score of 131. Senior Lydia Toth (Cleveland) was the Spartans only individual first-place finisher, winning the high jump with a mark of 1.57 meters. NEXT MEET: @ Oberlin College Invitational February 8.
