Faculty Senate forges ahead on projectsWhile awaiting the arrival of CWRU's new president, the Faculty Senate is forging ahead with projects that will help improve the retention of women faculty and the resources of University libraries. Edward Hundert will assume the presidency August 1. Jim Wagner has served as interim president since last April. "Ed is an accelerator and a builder, not someone who will dismantle or someone who is bound by tradition," Wagner told the Faculty Senate at its meeting last week. "With that in mind, we are not slowing down. Nothing should go into wait-and-see mode." R. Sue Pearlmutter, assistant professor at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences and chair of the Faculty Senate Committee on the Status of Women Faculty, reported to the senate that her committee is hard at work exploring issues involving the hiring and retention of women faculty. The group is expected to give its final recommendations in the coming months. Likewise, the Faculty Senate Committee on University Libraries expects to have a final report ready in March. The report will outline the current state of the system, "snapshots" of what the libraries could be in the future and the steps needed to realize those visions, said John Orlock, professor of theater arts and chair of the committee. Wagner and interim provost Lynn Singer also reported to the senate that work on several ongoing University-wide projects continues, including a hospital affiliation agreement; student recruitment and admissions; undergraduate curriculum; residential village and student life components of the master plan; utilization of Mt. Sinai property; areas of self study required as part of the upcoming accreditation process; appointment, promotion and tenure decisions; and strategic hiring. The senate next meets February 26.
