Women's b'ball coach hits century mark
by Creg Jantz

CWRU women's basketball Head Coach Kristin Hughes became the winningest coach in school history two years ago during the 2000-2001 season, surpassing former coach and assistant athletic director Nancy Gray 73-71 (12-year mark).

Hughes added another milestone to her tenure (10th season) in University Circle this month when her team defeated Thiel College 89-51, giving Hughes her 100th career victory.

Hughes, who began coaching in University Circle in 1993, is a lifetime 100-133.

"Quite honestly after 10 years you would hope to get your 100th a little faster," said Hughes. "It's definitely been a building process and throughout those 100 there have been some great ones. I would hope the next 100 come a lot faster than the first."

Before Hughes arrived in Cleveland, the Spartans had only posted four winning seasons in 22 years. Including this season, Hughes has guided her teams to four above-.500 campaigns, including a school record 20-win (20-7) season a year ago and the team's first ever NCAA postseason bid.

Not a bad turn around considering her first team at CWRU finished the exact opposite at 5-20.

"The number is nice, but there has been 1,000 great memories as compared to just 100 wins," Hughes said. "A lot more goes into it than just the numbers and records."

The Spartans, 4-3, are idle through Christmas, not playing again until 2 p.m. December 28 at home versus Allegheny College in Horsburgh Gymnasium at the Veale Center.

They begin University Athletic Association play at 3 p.m. January 11 at home against Emory University.
