Dec. 23 made holiday this year

Rhonda Gross, executive vice president and chief operating officers, has announced that this year Monday, December 23, will be observed as an official University holiday along with Tuesday, December 24, and Wednesday, December 25.

Network card drivers available

Updated NetGear network card drivers for Windows are available to the campus community from the Software Center at http://www.cwru.edu/softwarecenter in the "additional software" section. These drivers are of benefit to anyone who runs the Eudora e-mail client, as the drivers fix known issues which have prevented Eudora from working properly with the NetGear network cards.

Apply for tuition waiver Jan. 2

Faculty and staff can apply for tuition waiver certification for the spring semester from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays from January 2 through February 28 in the Benefits Office in 224 Crawford Hall.

Alumna cited in Massachusetts

CWRU alumna Judith Miller has been named Massachusetts Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Miller earned her doctorate in molecular biology and microbiology from CWRU's School of Graduate Studies in 1978. She is a professor of biology and biotechnology and director of the Center for Educational Development, Technology and Assessment at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where she has been on faculty since 1978.

Directories to be circulated

CWRU directories have arrived. The mailroom has been delivering one copy of the CWRU directory to each full-time faculty and staff person. If more directories are needed for a department, e-mail cwrudir. The new online directory is at http://cnswww.cns.cwru.edu/phone/phonebook/local/.

This year is the last year for a printed directory. The online directory will continue to be updated and available.

Faculty aid Ukraine med school

George Kikano, chair of family medicine, and Jason Chao, associate professor of family medicine, both of the CWRU School of Medicine and University Hospitals of Cleveland, are flying to L'viv, Ukraine, to help that city's medical school with curriculum development.

The week-long trip is one of several that they and other health care professionals have made as part of the L'viv-Cleveland primary health care partnership that was formed in 1999 to work on health care delivery and education issues.

Also involved from CWRU are Stephen Flynn, associate clinical professor of family medicine at Fairview Hospital, and Carlyn Yanda, instructor in reproduction biology and in the Center for Adolescent Health.

Ostrach elected to AAAS council

Simon Ostrach, the Wilburt J. Austin Distinguished Professor of Engineering at CWRU, director of the National Center for Microgravity Research on Fluid and Combustion based at CWRU and NASA Glenn Research Center and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) has been elected a member of the AAAS council.

As a member of the council, Ostrach will help to nominate and elect other Midwest fellows.

He was elected to the academy in 2001.

Dentistry grad wins alum award

Henry John Sazima, a native Clevelander, became the first graduate of the CWRU School of Dentistry to receive the President's Award for Distinguished Alumni from the University.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Adelbert College in 1948 and continued at the University to receive his dental degree in 1953 from the Western Reserve University School of Dentistry.

After practicing dentistry with his father, Sazima entered the U.S. Navy in 1962, where he had a 27-year career as a teacher, researcher, author and scientist. He retired from the Navy in 1988 with the rank of Rear Admiral in the Dental Corps.

Sazima then served 12 years as executive director of the Academy of Dentistry International, an international honor society with members in 61 countries.

He also was instrumental in establishing the Naval Officers Scholarship Endowment Fund at the CWRU dental school, which has reached an endowment of $81,000.

Weight group to start session

The next session of CWRU's Weight Watchers At Work program begins from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. January 9.

Fourteen sessions are available for the price of 12. The cost is $138 payable by cash, check or charge. When paying by check, members can make three $46 payments.

Baumeister named APA fellow

Roy F. Baumeister, EB Smith Professor in the Liberal Arts and professor of psychology, has been elected by his peers as a fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) for 2003.

APA fellows are selected for their contributions to the research, teaching or practice of psychology.

Baumeister has worked at CWRU since 1979.
