Evolution debate to continue

CWRUÕs Center for Science and Mathematics Education will host a discussion on evolution and intelligent design, featuring Eugenie Scott from the National Center for Science Education, who will speak on ÒDarwin and the Politics of Science Education.Ó at 2 p.m. December 8 in Strosacker Auditorium.

Local Ohio Board of Education members Virgil Brown Jr. and Marlene Jennings will comment.

OMA conducts turkey drive

CWRU's Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) is coordinating a drive to purchase Thanksgiving turkeys for underprivileged families in the Cleveland area.

The cost to sponsor a family is $10, and donations of any amount will be accepted through November 22. Contributions can be made at the office in 116 Baker.

Timecard deadlines changed

In order for flexible employees to receive their paychecks in a timely manner during the holiday season, the following timecard deadlines have been established:

  • For the week ending November 24, timecards are due noon November 21.
  • For the week ending December 1, timecards are due noon November 27.
  • For the week ending December 22, timecards are due noon December 19.

Since timecards are due before the end of the work week, some hours may need to be estimated. Adjustments should be submitted in writing the following day to Spherion in 320 Crawford Hall.

Center handles key, lock repair

Effective November 1, all concerns related to key and lock repairs or replacement should be directed to the Customer Service Center for Facility Operations at 368-2580.

The center also receives requests by e-mail at facility@po.cwru.edu and fax at 368-0930.

Key issuance requests and broken key replacements should still be directed to Access Services in Crawford Hall.

New bursar's office formed

The student loans, cashier and student accounts receivable departments have been combined and are now known as the bursar's office, which is led by Gisele Mosley, who has been promoted to bursar.

Holiday CircleFest is Dec. 8

The University Circle community will celebrate the holiday spirit with a day of seasonal music, gift shopping, exhibitions, decorations and refreshments during Holiday CircleFest from 1–6 p.m. December 8.

CWRU CircleFest activities include Severance Hall's Festival of Choirs performing in the lobby of the Peter B. Lewis building and a digital display portraying "One Week in the Life of University Circle" in Thwing Center.

In addition, many of the Circle's museums, attractions and institutions offer free admission and special entertainment throughout the day.

Nurses aid in amaryllis campaign

The Huntington's Disease Society of America, Northeast Ohio chapter, is sponsoring its annual Amaryllis Campaign on the CWRU campus.

Money raised from the campaign will be used for family care and research. Huntington's Disease is an inherited degenerative brain disorder that results in progressive loss of control of body and mind. As yet there is no cure or effective treatment for the disease, which is fatal.

Amaryllis gift boxes are available for $10 and include one bulb, a decorative white pot, planting medium and planting instructions.

Coordinating the campaign is Marion Good, associate professor in the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and Amaryllis Coordinator on the board of directors, Huntington's Disease Society of America, Northeast Ohio chapter.

Byrd-Bennett to speak

Barbara Byrd-Bennett, chief executive officer of the Cleveland Municipal School District, will speak on "The Role of the University in K-12 Education" during the McMillan Lecture from 4–5 p.m. December 10 in 13 Crawford Hall.

The McMillan Lecture is sponsored by the University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education (UCITE).

MLK essays due Nov. 27

Entries for the seventh annual Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest are due by 5 p.m. November 27. Essays of up to 1,000 words should illuminate some aspect of King's life in terms that have meaning and influence today.

Submit essays to Tina Filsinger, 304 Crawford Hall (7047) or e-mail her at bjf. The entry must include name, social security number, campus address, telephone number, e-mail address and category.

ShowCASE calls for abstracts

To participate in Research ShowCASE 2003, abstracts of presentations must be submitted by January 10.
