In Memoriam:
Morrison had been top prof in chemical engineering

Philip W. Morrison Jr., associate professor of chemical engineering at CWRU, died November 4 after a brief illness. He was 42.

Morrison received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Princeton University in 1982 and his doctorate from the University of California in 1987. He worked for Advanced Fuel Research Inc. and North Carolina State University before joining CWRU in 1993.

Morrison won numerous awards and honors including the "Top Prof" award at CWRU and a prestigious National Science Foundation Career Award. He was a four-time nominee for CWRU's Carl F. Wittke Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching and a Glennan Fellow.

He served as adviser to the cooperative education program of the Case School of Engineering and represented the department of chemical engineering in many University affairs.

An acknowledged international expert in process monitoring using spectroscopic methods, Morrison performed research for companies and federal agencies in diverse areas, including hazardous chemical waste disposal, carbon dioxide sequestration and diamond synthesis. He published many papers on his work, was awarded four U.S. patents and presented his research at numerous national and international meetings.

Morrison was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society, the Electrochemical Society and the American Society for Engineering Education.

Donations in Morrison's memory can be made to the Chemical Engineering B.S./M.S. Scholarship Fund at CWRU.
