ASSOCIATION HONORS: When the University Athletic Association handed out its Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending September 4, Spartan sophomore men's cross country runner Matt Finnerty (Poland, Ohio) made the list. Finnerty placed first of 102 runners as the Spartans won the second annual Bill Sudeck Classic on September 1. Finnerty's time was 26:08, 11 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Another CWRU student-athlete won the award for the week ending September 10. Junior goalkeeper John Chenevey (Canton) made 22 saves in two games as the Spartans posted a 1-1 record last week. Chenevey stopped a game-high 11 shots in a 1-0 loss to eighth-ranked John Carroll University, and made 11 saves to pick up his third shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Mount Union College. Chenevey is 2-1-1 on the year, with 30 saves and a 0.29 goals against average. He was named the UAA's Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week.

ROOKIE ROCKS: The Spartan women's soccer team went 2-0 last week with wins over the College of Wooster and Washington & Jefferson College. Freshman midfielder Andrea Barbieri (Troy. Michigan) is having a great rookie campaign thus far. Barbieri, who had a goal against Wooster and a goal and assist versus Washington & Jefferson, currently leads the team in scoring with eight points on three goals and two assists. She has also recorded two game-winning goals.
