The New York Times has hailed CWRU alumna Gina Gibney as "a poet of modern dance." Cleveland audiences can see her perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 15 in Gartner Auditorium at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Her performance is part of the museum's new Friday night performing arts series of music and dance, Carnevale, that runs June through August.
Gibney's acclaimed dance company, Gina Gibney Dance, will perform the Cleveland premiere of Several Truths. Described as a dance "brimming with emotion and intricately crafted choreography," this dance work is a series of portraits of women who share a need to find identity, understanding, and connection.
Gibney founded the dance company in 1991 and re-established it as an all-female ensemble in 1997. She also developed two community-based projects in New York City -- Artists@WORK that advocates the development of new dance works, and Women@WORK that goes into the community to show the creative and transforming powers of dance. She is the curator of DraftWork at New York City's Danspace Project and founder of Studio 5-2 on Broadway.
Gibney graduated with honors from CWRU's Master of Fine Arts dance program in 1982. She earned her B.A. in theater from CWRU in 1979.
