The baseball team (9-12, 1-6 UAA) went 4-2 during three recent home double headers. The Spartans split games again Grove City College, winning 8-7 and losing 8-2. Against La Roche, the Spartans won both games, 14-7 and 26-6. They finished up the week with Thiel College on Friday. The Spartans split with Thiel College, winning 10-7 and losing 11-8. Senior first baseman/designated hitter Tim Greer (Pepper Pike) and junior outfielder Chris Burrell (Euclid) both hit well for CWRU. Greer went 13-20 with seven doubles and six runs batted in, while Burrell went 12-17 with a double, two stolen bases, and two RBI's. Sophomore pitcher Leo McNeely (North Olmsted) picked up the win for the Spartans against Grove City, freshman pitcher Chris Sullivan (Worthington) and senior Vince Domenico (Forestville) picked up wins against La Roche, and junior Mike Zucosky (Wintersville) won versus Thiel.
The golf team hosted Lakeland Community College at Orchard Hills Golf Club. The Spartans finished seven strokes behind Lakeland with 338. Freshman Tom Lally (Woodbury, Minnesota) and sophomore Brian Barbarits (Alden, New York) led the team, with both shooting an 84.
The softball team (21-7, 4-3 UAA) played two double headers last week. They split with Baldwin Wallace College on the road, losing 5-3 and winning 10-1. CWRU then faced Kenyon College Thursday at home, and the Spartans swept Kenyon 5-1 and 1-0. Senior pitcher/designated hitter Melissa Scopilliti (Streetsboro) led the team during the four games, going 6-13 with six runs scored, five RBIs, three home runs, and two wins on the mound.
The women's tennis team (4-5, 0-0 UAA) faced Baldwin Wallace College on the road, and the Spartans lost 8-1. Freshman no. 6 singles player Charmane Harrison (Cleveland) notched CWRU's only victory.
The men's tennis team (7-1, 0-0 UAA) improved its winning streak to four games by beating Otterbein College 4-3 on the road. CWRU lost their No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches and all three double matches, but the Spartans won the last four singles matches to sneak by with the win. Junior Rupin Malhotra (London, Ontario), sophomore Ravi Dipali (Avon Lake), freshman Vamsi Koduri (Worthington), and freshman Drew Schifle (North Olmsted) all won their respective singles matches in two sets.
The men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Mount Union Open. Top finishers for the Spartans included Katherine Beck (Uniontown), who finished third in the women's 200-meter run; Christy Lett (Cincinnati), third in the women's 800-meter run; Lydia Toth (Cleveland), third in the women's 100-meter high hurdles and first in the women's high jump' Aqueelah Jordan (Cleveland), third in the women's javelin; Tom Dominic (Cincinnati), third in the men's 400-meter run and second in the men's high jump; and the third-place men's four-by-400-meter relay team of Steve Anthony (Columbus), Paul Tesar (Eastlake), Dominic, and Pat Coles (Monroeville, Pennsylvania).
