Concert will feature Baroque musicAcclaimed violinist Jeanne Lamon, director of Toronto's Baroque orchestra, Tafelmusik, will perform at CWRU's Harkness Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Saturday December 1. Lamon is part of a new chamber ensemble, Trio Seraphim, which also features cellist Christina Mahler and harpsichordist Barbara Weiss. The first half of the program will explore the energetic, virtuosic music of Vivaldi and other Italian Baroque composers. The second half will feature works by J.S. Bach in the Italian style, including a sonata performed on the rarely heard five-stringed piccolino cello. Lamon has been music director of Tafelmusik, Toronto's internationally acclaimed Baroque orchestra, since 1981. She has received numerous awards from the Canadian government, including membership in the Order of Canada, the country's highest honor for lifetime achievement in one's field. In addition, she was the first violinist to win the Erwin Bodky Award for Excellence in the Performance of Early Music. A native of Holland, Mahler is principal cellist of Tafelmusik. She performs as soloist with Tafelmusik and other orchestras and is also known for her performances of romantic music for the cello. Weiss recently was visiting professor of harpsichord at Oberlin Conservatory and plays harpsichord and organ with many early music ensembles. Both Weiss and Mahler are familiar to Cleveland audiences from their frequent performances with Apollo's Fire, Cleveland's Baroque orchestra. Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults, or $18 for students and those over age 65. To order, call 368-2402, or send e-mail to cmn5. Return to the online edition of the 11-29-01 Campus News. |
