Fall dance concert is November 8-10

The Mather Dance Center will present its fall concert, Collections, at 8 p.m. November 8-10, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 11.

The concert is a collection of dances by internationally recognized choreographers. It will include a special appearance by Kelly Holt, a former dancer with Erick Hawkins who helped create the graduate dance program at CWRU in 1975 and served as its co-director.

Holt will appear as the interlocutor in "Trio for One," a piece choreographed by Lyndon Branaugh of the Place in London to the music by Vangelis. Holt will dance with his former student Gary Galbraith, who is a former principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company and the current artistic director of the Mather Dance Program, as well as graduate student Tan Temel.

Kimberly Karpanty and Tommy Parlon, dance faculty members at Kent State University, also will be special guests on the program, performing their dance "...in the cold," set to excerpts from String Quartet #2 by Henryk Gorecki.

These will be among other works on the program:

  • "Narayama," a dance to Felix Mendelssohn's Concerto in A minor for piano and strings, choreographed by Pascal Rioult, former principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company and founder of Pascal Rioult Dance Theatre. Galbraith will dance the piece with CWRU dance program director Karen Potter, a former dancer with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company.
  • "Aftershot," a dance to the second movement of Mozart's Concerto No. 21 in D major, choreographed by Richard Dickinson, director of the Great Lakes Ballet and former ballet master for Ohio Ballet. Dancers for this piece will be graduate dance students Carisa Armstrong and Tan Temel.
  • The Mather Dance Ensemble will perform "Labyrinth," choreographed by Diane Gray, former associate artistic director and principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company.
  • "G Song," choreographed by Galbraith, is set to music of the same name by Terry Riley. The Mather Dance Ensemble also will perform this piece.

Admission for the concert is $9 for adults, $7 for CWRU staff and senior citizens over 60, and $5 for students. For information or reservations, call 368-6262.
