Law school to host Fiske lecture

Prior to the terrorist attacks on the United States, campaign finance reform was one of the most pressing issues facing Congress and the public. The attacks have put this and most other issues on hold, but they have not gone away.

Fred S. McChesney, the Class of 1967 James B. Haddad Professor of Law at Northwestern University School of Law, will speak on campaign finance reform at CWRU's School of Law, as part of the school's Arthur W. Fiske Memorial Lecture series.

The title of the talk is "Private-Interest Buyers and Politically-Elected Sellers: Who's Zoomin' Who in Campaign Finance Reform?" The event begins at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 16 in room A59 of the CWRU law school. A reception will follow.

"We are grateful to the family of Arthur Fiske for providing the School of Law a forum to showcase distinguished lecturers and important topics, said Gerald Korngold, the dean and McCurdy Professor of Law. "The school is honored to host this important event."

McChesney's primary scholarly interests are in the areas of business and antitrust law and their intersection with economic theory. He is the author or co-author of numerous articles and books in these fields, including Antitrust Law: Interpretation and Implementation, Economic Inputs, Legal Outputs: The Role of Economists in Modern Antitrust, and Money for Nothing: Politicians, Rent Extraction, and Political Extortion.

Before joining the Northwestern faculty, McChesney taught at Cornell Law School. From 1983-97 he taught law and economics at Emory University, was associate director for Policy and Evaluation for the Federal Trade Commission from 1981-83, and has been an associate at the law firm Steptoe and Johnson. From 1978-79 he served as clerk for Judge Alfred T. Goodwin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

McChesney has also taught abroad, serving as visiting professor at the Centro di Formazione e Studi in Naples, Italy, and a visiting scholar at Oxford University, as well as a lecturer in France and Russia. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Virginia, a J.D. cum laude from the University of Miami, and an A.B. magna cum laude from Holy Cross College.

Alice Fiske White established the Arthur W. Fiske Memorial Lectureship in 1988 to honor her brother's devotion to CWRU and his interest in legal education. Fiske is a 1931 graduate of Western Reserve University's Adelbert College and a 1933 graduate of the University's law school. After graduating, he went on to spend virtually his entire career -- 50 years -- as head librarian of the Cleveland Law Library Association.

In addition, Fiske served as clerk of the City of Euclid and as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. He was a trustee of the Legal Aid Society, the Citizens League, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, and the City Club.
