Wagner becomes provost

James Wagner has been appointed provost and University vice president, effective September 1. He will be responsible for leading academic operations and services in coordination with President David Auston, and will be Auston's principal deputy in the University's administration.


Best named assistant dean of graduate studies

Derrick Best has joined CWRU as assistant dean of graduate studies, effective August 14. For approximately five years, Best has used technological tools such as Web page design, database development, statistics analysis, and statistical modeling in his academic advising activities.


Sculpture garden being installed

Construction is under way on the new Turning Point Garden, which architect Philip Johnson designed to complement his first sculpture, Turning Point.


Gup advocates fruitful indirection in convocation address

In his keynote address at the Fall Convocation, which was held August 31 to mark the beginning of the academic year, faculty member Ted Gup extolled the virtues of viewing life experiences as an enlightening journey of personal growth, rather than the drudgery of calculating success with temporal, short-sighted measures.


Gilmore named associate dean of arts and sciences

Grover "Cleve" Gilmore has been appointed associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He assumes the position which Samuel Savin vacated upon becoming the college's interim dean July 1, after former dean John Bassett became president of Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.


Savinell named interim engineering dean

Robert Savinell has been appointed interim dean at the Case School of Engineering. The appointment became effective September 1 and will continue until a permanent successor is appointed for James Wagner, who has become provost and University vice president.
