Randall to retire May 31

Prudence Randall will retire May 31 as assistant to the president and secretary of the University Faculty. She has held those positions since 1992.

"She has served with distinction, and has been an important contributor to the work of the faculty," said President David Auston in announcing her plans to retire. "Please join me in thanking Pru for her service to Case Western Reserve University -- particularly to the University Faculty and the Faculty Senate -- and in wishing her a rewarding and enjoyable retirement," he added.

In addition to these positions, Randall also has served as coordinator of commencement activities, overseen use and maintenance of Putnam House, and worked with the University Council. Randall also has provided administrative support to the Staff Advisory Council, of which she is an ex officio member.

"I've been especially fortunate in this position to work with people across the board," Randall said. Her activities with the Faculty Senate, Staff Advisory Council, Student and Faculty Executive Roundtable (SAFER), and commencement have put her in touch with faculty, staff, students, trustees, and alumni from areas throughout the University.

"I've seen a really sincere caring and family spirit that I think is unique to this institution, and a spirit which has transcended generations Randall said. "I'm really pleased to have been part of it."

Randall first came to CWRU in 1956 as a student. She earned three degrees here -- a B.S. in speech pathology and audiology from Flora Stone Mather College in 1960, an M.A. in the social foundations of education in 1966, and a Ph.D. in behavioral science in urban education in 1971.

This Ph.D. program was a precursor of the movements that helped lead to CWRU's federation in 1967. The program began in 1966 with 10 students, who took classes together at both Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve University, but developed dissertations in fields such as history (Randall's), political science, anthropology, psychology, operations research, and organizational science.

"It was a fascinating combination of people," Randall said. "A lot of interaction went on between the various departments. That was one of the highlights of my education here because it was such a significant period of transition."

Randall worked in the Mather College dean's office from 1962-64, was assistant director of admission for Western Reserve University from 1964-66, and was a Ph.D. research fellow from 1966-69.

Randall held editorial positions at the Macmillan Company from 1969-74 and at the Episcopal Church Center from 1983-89.

She also worked at the Mount St. Ursula Speech Center in the Bronx, Long Island University, and Baruch College of the City University of New York.

Randall has been active in CWRU's alumni organizations and visiting committees. She was president of the Metropolitan New York Alumni Association from 1980-82, served on the Visiting Committee for Student Affairs from 1980-92 (and chaired it from 1990-92), served on the Western Reserve College visiting committee in the 1980s, and was a member of the University Council from 1988-92.

She held several posts in the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association in the 1960s and also served on CWRU's Board of Overseers.

Randall's plans for her retirement include skiing and golfing at a house in Vermont, traveling, gardening, visiting her daughter and son-in-law in Montana (including a trip to Glacier National Park in the fall), and exploring more of the resources available in Cleveland and around the state.

She said she particularly enjoys day trips within Ohio. "I really enjoy being in the heartland."

Randall said she also would like to return to Europe, see more of Asia (she's already visited Japan), tour Costa Rica and Ecuador in Central America, and visit Argentina and Patagonia in South America. "I love to travel," she said.
