Kathy J. Keister, a gerontological nurse researcher from CWRU's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, has received a $4,000 scholarship from the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).
Keister, who lives in Bowling Green, Ohio, received the AARP Gerontology Scholarship May 18 from Robert Shreve, outgoing chair of AARP's board of directors.
The scholarship, which was established in his honor, recognizes a promising young scholar in the field of aging. The AARP awarded the scholarship funds to CWRU's Center on Aging and Health, and the center selected the recipient.
Keister received a B. S. in 1979 and a B.S.N. in 1982 from Bowling Green State University. In 1988, she earned her M.S.N. in adult health nursing from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Since 1993, Keister has been enrolled in the doctoral program at the Bolton School, and recently completed the graduate certificate in gerontology program through the University's Center on Aging and Health.
As a doctoral student, Keister participated in a $1.6 million study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that examined hypertension in black women who care for elderly relatives.
She helped collect and analyze data and disseminate research findings by preparing posters for presentations and professional meetings. For her own dissertation, Keister will examine the process of relocating older adults to nursing homes.
