Women's Coalition hosts Wednesday Women's Forums
CLEVELAND -- The University Women's Coalition has resumed its series of Wednesday Women's Forum events. Each forum runs from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the parlor of Guilford House, located on Bellflower Road. Here is a list of events planned for this semester:
- September 12: "Who, What, Where, When, Why: The Five W's of a Women's Center at CWRU." Discuss the five pertinent questions about the development of a women's center with a panel of members of the CWRU community involved in this effort.
- September 26: "30 Years of Women's Studies: Generations of Change." It's the 30th anniversary of women's studies at CWRU this year. Join in the celebration with a panel of women discussing the roles of women and feminism over the past 30 years and more.
- October 3: "Register Your Rights: Women's Votes Count!" As we were reminded in our last presidential election, every vote counts. A panel of women politicians from the local, state, and national levels will lead a discussion on how women's votes and women in politics make a particular difference in the United States.
- October 10: "Deconstructing Prejudice: African-American Women." The experiences of all women are not the same. Gender issues are also influenced by factors such as age, class, race, ethnicity, and religion. Gaining a greater understanding of all women involves exploring these differences. Barbara Danforth, the executive director of the YWCA, will moderate a panel of faculty, staff, and students expressing their opinions on, ideas, and experiences of African-American women.
- October 17: "Effective Women Teams and Gender Issues." We all love the joy and power of working together with a dynamic and harmonious team. Learn how successful women's teams function best -- and how you can create one -- from a panel of leading women faculty members in the Department of Organizational Behavior at the Weatherhead School of Management.
- October 24: "Reproductive Rights." Join a panel of representatives from Planned Parenthood, Preterm, the Cleveland Free Clinic, and the Women's Clinic at CWRU's University Health Service in a discussion of the changing reproductive rights and access to services.
- October 31: "Women as Witches." Sorceress, enchantress, siren, hag, crone, witch -- women have been tormented, tortured, and sacrificed because of these labels for centuries. In celebration of Halloween, women involved in "alternate spirituality" will dispel the myths and stereotypes of women as evil, conniving, manipulative, dangerous witches.
- November 7: "Women and the Arts." The relationship of woman as subject and object in the visual arts is malleable and fascinating. This panel discussion will feature women from the Cleveland Museum of Art, Spaces, and the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art.
- November 14: "Supporting Survivors." Rape is a horrifying experience, not only for those who are raped, but also for their friends and family. Survivors of rape and representatives of the Rape Crisis Center will lead this discussion.
- November 28: "Swing into Finals!" Members of CWRU's Ballroom Dance Society will demonstrate fancy footwork that may come in handy for upcoming holiday parties.
- December 5: "Discovering Commonalities in Cultures." Winter brings not only cold weather, but a variety of seasonal celebrations. A panel of women from various cultures will discuss their holidays and women's roles in these celebrations and ceremonies. Plus, taste the delicious treats that also help the celebrating.
