CARCINOGEN SUPER DATABASE (running time = 1:40)

SUGGESTED INTRO: A SUPER DATABASE OF KNOWN CARCINOGENS IS HELPING TO SPEED SAFE NEW DRUGS TO MARKET AND SPARE TEST ANIMALS IN THE PROCESS. HERE'S A REPORT:

VIDEO: Shots of pharmacist counting prescription pills. Cut to computer screen with data on cancer causing chemicals. Cut to shots of Gilles Klopman at his computer.

VOICEOVER: IT TAKES MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND MANY YEARS TO BRING A NEW DRUG TO MARKET, BUT THAT'S ABOUT TO CHANGE. NEW COMPUTER SOFTWARE DEVELOPED BY GILLES KLOPMAN, PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY AT CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY, CAN DETERMINE IN MINUTES WHETHER A CHEMICAL POSES A HEALTH RISK OR IS DANGEROUS TO THE ENVIRONMENT. THE SOFTWARE CONTAINS DATA ON MILLIONS OF CANCER-CAUSING AGENTS.

SOT & SUGGESTED SUPER:
Gilles Klopman, CWRU Professor of Chemistry

VIDEO: Cut-away of pharmacist.

INTERVIEW: "The program basically can be queried about the safety of a chemical even before the chemical is even made. So, it helps the drug companies to assess at a very early stage whether it's worth pursuing a chemical as a potential drug, and therefore decide when they have several candidates which one they should pursue because it has a better chance. So, it has benefits from the standpoint of the pharmaceutical company because it allows them to shorten the period it takes for them to get a new drug, it is benefit for the Food and Drug Administration because they know that the pharmaceutical company will have the tools to evaluate this at an early stage, and it mostly helps the consumer because we will have safer drugs." (TRT = 0:48)

VIDEO: Shots of computer screen data. Cut to shots of Gilles Klopman and other researchers discussing MCASE data at chalkboard. Cut to 3D computer graphic model of chemical molecule. Cut to Gilles Klopman at his computer. Black.

VOICEOVER: THE DATABASE IS CALLED MULTIPLE COMPUTER AUTOMATED STRUCTURE EVALUATION OR M-C-A-S-E. CASE WESTERN RESERVE AND MULTICASE CORPORATION HAVE LICENSED M-C-A-S-E SOFTWARE TO THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION WHICH CONTINUALLY ADDS NEW DATA ON CANCER CAUSING AGENTS. IT WILL SAVE THE DRUG INDUSTRY BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN RESEARCH AND SPARE MANY ANIMAL LIVES BY ALLOWING DRUG DEVELOPERS TO COMPARE HARMFUL SUBSTANCES ON COMPUTER.

THIS IS DAVE NAROSNY REPORTING FROM CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY, CLEVELAND.
